Hypnotherapy for Writers

Did you know that Charles Dickens was a mesmerist (hypnotist)? In a letter to his wife, Dickens wrote that mesmerism "had become his guiding principle and the key to the ability which enabled him to create his endless galleries of true-to-life fictional characters."

John C. Hughes, "The History of Hypnotism: Charles Dickens Heads the Creative Mesmerists," Journal of Hypnotism, June 2008.

Hypnotherapy can help writers:

  • reach their potential
  • break through writer's block
  • get into good writing habits
  • be more disciplined about sending out manuscripts
  • gain confidence
  • cope with rejection
  • generate material
  • create or explore characters
  • access the subconscious mind—a wellspring of ideas, images, and insight

Certified hypnotherapist, Susan Gold, has an M.A. in Creative Writing from San Diego State University. She is a published poet, a fiction writer, and a former fiction editor of Pacific Review. She has taught writing and literature courses at the high school and college levels for the past 17 years and in 2006 teamed up with Evelyn Pine to teach Writing with the Tarot workshops in the community. She enjoys using hypnotherapy to help writers reach their potential and to achieve their goals.
