Personal Experiences with Hypnosis
My first experience with hypnosis
It was a cold evening in the Santa Cruz mountains—a damp cold that called for thermals, a wool turtleneck and a parka. I had on a thin pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. There had been a heatwave on the Peninsula, and I had packed the sweatshirt as a precaution. I couldn’t wait to get into my sleeping bag.
I was a junior in high school on a leadership retreat, and one of the chaperones was a hypnotherapist—whatever that was. Read on.
Feeling the truth
“Are you still carrying the anger?” My hypnotherapist asked me during an emotional session.
As I said the word, “No,” I felt warmth spread through my body along with a pleasant stillness, a sense of calm and peace. Read on.
Goal Achievement
Tips for New Year's Resolutions
Set goals which are specific, manageable, plausible, and measurable. State them in the present tense.
Consider the difference between the statements, This year I’m going to get into shape, and I go to the gym for 45 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday , and Saturday mornings. Read on.
Weight Loss
How I kicked the sugar habit through hypnosis
When I was in high school, I would sometimes eat ice cream for breakfast. My parents would joke about how I would come down stairs in the morning, my eyes half-closed, and open the freezer, spoon in hand.
I always loved sweets. Read on.
Smoking Cessation
Calculate how much it costs to smoke
Lately I have had a number of clients who have come to me for smoking cessation. At the beginning of a session, I ask them what is motivating their desire to be a non-smoker, what they will be giving up, and what they will gain.
Many folks mention with a chuckle that they will save money. Read on.
Researchers have found a new motivation for kicking the habit
Did you know that cats who live with smokers lick and ingest the carcinogenic compounds that settle on their fur? Read on.
Self-Hypnosis
The power of self-hypnosis: a client's story
What is self-hypnosis?
Self-hypnosis is the process of inducing a trance state in oneself in order to achieve a focused awareness or positive selective thinking that can be used for self-improvement.
Actually all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Even in a hypnotherapy session, it’s the client that does the real work—a hypnotherapist serves as a guide. Read on.
Using Guided Imagery to Overcome Creative Blocks
On 10/2/11, I delivered a 90-minute presentation at Imagery International’s annual conference. My topic was “Using Guided Imagery To Overcome Creative Blocks.” In it, I mapped eight stages of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey onto the creative process. To illustrate the eight stages, I shared a tale from The Odyssey, I discussed how each stage relates to the creative process, and for each stage I offered questions for reflection, and explained a couple guided imagery techniques that I find helpful. I posted my presentation on my blog in ten parts. Click here for the series of entries.
Hypnosis for Writers
Hypnosis for writers—a workshop overview
Why I started the workshop
Over the years I have written poetry and fiction and have taught writing and literature courses at the college and high school levels. As a hypnotherapist, it made sense to reach out to other writers. I have always been amazed by how creative the imagination is in dreams—how effortlessly we create vivid characters, narratives, and settings while we sleep. I thought it would be exciting to guide writers into their subconscious to tap into that wellspring of material. Read on.
Hypnosis for writers—automatic writing in trance
I facilitate a monthly hypnosis workshop for writers. See Hypnosis for Writers—workshop overview. The first session focused on automatic writing, a technique the surrealist poets of the 1920s used to access original imagery from the subconscious. Below are my notes, the hypnosis script I wrote for the workshop, and the materials I shared with the group. Read on.
History of Hypnosis
The Greek god of sleep
In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, there is a gorgeous passage where we can see the god Hypnos in his House of Sleep. Read on.
